Thesis & Dissertation Guidelines

Preparation, format and submission requirements (Part IV of the Regulations).

Key requirements

  • Academic Master's candidates submit a dissertation; PhD candidates submit a thesis.
  • Work must be entirely the candidate's own; no substantial part previously presented for a higher degree elsewhere.
  • An abstract is required. Writing is normally in English (or another Senate-approved language, with English title/abstract translation).
  • Internal defence is required before external examination. PhD candidates also present mandatory seminars.
  • Typing: double spaced; margins 38 mm (1.5") left and 25 mm (1.0") on other sides.

Typical structure

Preliminary pages, chapters (introduction through conclusion), references and appendices — with disciplinary variations as approved.

Binding colours: Official cover colours for theses/dissertations/projects by programme level are specified in the General Regulations (§4.11). Confirm the current colour chart with SPGS before final binding.
